A chunk of Ghana’s aged population is likely to die from cardiovascular diseases in the coming years.

According to the Ghana National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the lifestyle of many Ghanaians who are now approaching their old age would not help matters.

The centre said many people prone to heart diseases have poor dieting behaviours and are unable to keep fit.

Director of the Centre, Dr. Lawrence Sereboe, in an interview with XYZ News said while efforts are being made by his outfit to provide quality heart care services, if massive education is not carried out, the centre will be overwhelmed by patients in the near future.

“As a country, we have adopted a lot of western lifestyles and we are going to have western diseases which are mainly cardiovascular.

“Worldwide you would find out that the majority of deaths are from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. We are getting there, our people are getting older, life expectancy has increased and people have changed their diets to western diets.

“So we expect to have more diseases of the heart as the population of old people increases, as we change our diet and as people continue to smoke,” Dr. Serebour said.
