Students In Sanitation Module Launched In Upper West Region

The Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) together with sanitation agencies made up of Environmental Health and Sanitation Department (EHSD), Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) and Zoomlion have launched the Ghana Student Industrial Attachment Program (GSIAP) – Environmental Sanitation Module Wa – Upper West Region.

GSIAP is a unique carrier path finder designed to help students find and develop their carrier through industrial attachments opportunities in leading organizations in Ghana while on vacation.

Students placed on the project will be trained on best sanitation practices and placed within their communities as public education interns to embark on local sustainable sanitation awareness and behavioural change campaign.

Launching the program, the Upper West Regional Minister, Mr. Avea Nsor said through the project students will be helped to develop themselves while on industrial attachments various organizations across Ghana.

The theme for this year’s GSIAP is ‘‘Improved Environmental Sanitation: the role of students, media and stakeholders’’.

He added that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has prioritized environmental sanitation as a key deliverable area with practical steps to ensure our cities and towns are clean and safe.

“This will go a long way to help stop the transmission of preventable diseases like cholera and diarrheal diseases in the country”.

Mr. Nsor said access and coverage of sanitation services are woefully lagging behind demand whiles increase in population and modern lifestyle have made it even worse hence this project.

“The major underlying cause of poor sanitation confronting the country is poor attitude and behavior of the citizenry. It is a common spectacle to see people defecating openly at our undeveloped plots, nearby bushes, drains and behind other people’s houses and properties. This practice must stop”.

Under program it’s envisaged that the involvement of students in public education on sanitation will reverse the poor sanitation trend from the local to national levels because the students under GSIAP will raise awareness on environmental sanitation in communities to change their behavior, provide information and sensitize community members on maintenance of sanitation facilities and good sanitation and hygiene.

The Minister entreated the student to take the training sessions of the GSIAP on sanitation serious to enable the country to achieve her MDG targets for environmental sanitation.

The regional environmental health officer, Mr. Rex Jakpa in a presentation, outlined the rational and objectives of the GSIAP and also touched on the targeted beneficiaries, implementation plans, timeframe and programme cycle.

In his presentation, the strategic partners, marketing plans and the social and economic impacts of the programme were also outlined.
